FHHS Named a Missouri Gold Star School

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has recognized Francis Howell High School (FHHS) as a
2020 Missouri Gold Star School. Only six other schools in Missouri were recognized this year as Gold Star Schools.

The Gold Star Schools program is designed to identify schools that are performing at a high level academically and making exceptional progress. FHHS is honored to join FHSD’s three other Missouri Gold Star Schools (named last year) – Becky-David, Daniel Boone, and Warren elementary schools. “We are extremely proud at Howell High to be recognized for our academic excellence,” said FHHS Principal Dr. Dave Wedlock. “Our students come ready to learn, and that culture of learning is apparent in the dedication of our teachers, students, and families.”

The Gold Star Schools criteria requires student test scores to be in the top 15 percent of all public schools in Missouri. Schools must meet their performance targets in English language arts and mathematics in each of the two years prior to nomination and must do the same for the year in which they are nominated.

“I am honored to recognize these outstanding schools for their commitment to providing a high-quality education to their students each and every day,” said Commissioner of Education Margie Vandeven. “To be acknowledged as Missouri’s representatives in this nationwide program is a testament to their efforts in preparing students of all ages for success.”

As a Gold Star School, FHHS is now eligible to be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a 2020 National Blue Ribbon School. The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program and the Missouri Gold Star Schools Program utilize the same criteria for nomination. Blue Ribbon Schools will be announced later this fall.
