Geometry

Course Description:

This course is designed for the student who wishes to continue the study of mathematics beyond the beginning algebra level.  Logical reasoning and real-world applications will be examined throughout the course. Technology will be incorporated throughout the course.

Essential Course Outcomes:

  1. Describe and apply inductive and deductive reasoning to form conjectures and prove or disprove conjectures including direct and indirect proofs.
  2. Apply mathematics to develop and justify values of angles in triangles, polygons and circles; parallel and perpendicular lines.
  3. Usea variety of representations (nets, isometric draws, etc.) to analyze relations among geometric objects.
  4. Identify similar/congruent figures and solve problems involving these figures including proving triangles congruent.
  5. Identify and apply rigid and non-rigid transformations of figures in a coordinate plane.
  6. Justify and apply formulas for perimeter, area and volume of 2- and 3-dimensional objects.
  7. Apply Pythagorean Theorem, distance formula, properties of special right triangles, properties of proportions and basic trigonometric ratios.

Materials Needed (Bring Daily):

·
Geometry Textbook
·
Pencils
·
Loose-leaf Paper
·
½” binder with dividers
·
TI – 84 Graphing Calculator (I have a classroom set of TI-84 calculators. My classroom set of calculators are the only calculators that are allowed to be used on tests and quizzes, including the final exam.)

Computing Your Grade:

Quarter and semester grades will be derived from a variety of sources: tests/quizzes and homework/classroom work. Your grade will be calculated based upon the following percentages.

Your quarter grades will be computed in the following manner:

Homework & Class work: 25% of your quarter grade

Tests & Quizzes: 75% of your quarter grade

Your semester grades will be computed in the following manner:

Semester 1 Semester 2

1st quarter 40% 3rd quarter 40%

2nd quarter 40% 4th quarter 40%

Final Exam 20% Final Exam 20%

Assignments:

I highly recommend using a pencil in this course. If you choose to use ink, please make sure it is either black or blue in color. All assignments are to be done on loose-leaf paper. No spiral notebook paper or paper with fringed edges will be accepted.

Online Grades

· I try to update my grade book daily. However, you must give me a week to grade tests.

· Z means truant, the student was here and had every opportunity to hand in the assignment and did not do it

· 0 means zero, the student was absent either on the day of the assignment or the day it was due and needs to hand in the assignment

Absences

· Parents must contact the attendance office within 24 hours of a student absence for a student to be able to receive credit for their missed work

· You have one day for each day you were absent to make up your absent work

· All absent work must be handed in before the unit test

Late Work

Not accepted!

Classroom Expectations

All school rules apply in this classroom

  • I expect everyone to be respectful of each other. Positive comments only!
  • I expect everyone to work very hard in my class. To be successful in any math class you should follow these guidelines:
    • Practice the concept immediately after it has been taught.
    • Check the answer to the problem you just finished. If you get the wrong answer rework the problem until you know how to do it correctly.
  • Use your notes and book for help while working on the assignment.
  • Ask questions in class about how to do certain steps of a problem if you are unsure.
  • Make arrangements to see me in the mornings or find a tutor.
  • I expect everyone to put learning math the most important thing for the 50 minutes that you are in my class.

Routines and Procedures:

1. Students will use either pencil, blue or black ink only on all assignments, tests, and quizzes.

2. All homeework papers should have a smooth, neat edge.

3. No personal grooming will be tolerated in the classroom. This includes brushing one’s hair and the application of make-up and perfumes and lotions.

4. Materials unrelated to the class are not allowed in the classroom and will be confiscated. This includes comic books, magazines, and assignments from other classes.

5. Cheating in any capacity will not be tolerated and will result in a zero (0%) for the assignment
