What is the A+ tutoring/mentoring requirement?

The A+ Schools Program requires all A+ students to complete 50 hours of unpaid tutoring/mentoring of other students.  All A+ tutoring opportunities must be arranged and coordinated through the FHHS A+ Coordinator, must take place on district property, and must be supervised by a district employee.  Volunteer and/or community service experiences not affiliated with the Francis Howell School District may not be counted toward the A+ tutoring requirement.

What are my tutoring/mentoring options?
The Francis Howell School District offers A+ tutoring opportunities at the elementary, middle, and high school level.  These opportunities are available after school and during Fall, Spring, and Summer Breaks.

After school opportunities include assisting in an elementary classroom until 4:00, or assisting at an elementary Vacation Station program from4:15-6:00pm.  Our cooperating elementary schools include John Weldon,Daniel Boone and Independence.  There are also after school opportunities available at Francis Howell Middle School and Bryan Middle School.

In addition to after school opportunities, students may also elect to earn their hours at an elementary Vacation Station program during Fall Break, Spring Break, or Summer Break.  During Breaks, the Vacation Station program is open all day and offers A+ students the opportunity to work full-time and earn their hours in a relatively short amount of time.  This option is helpful for those students whose extracurricular activities and obligations make it difficult to participate in after school A+ tutoring.

There are a limited number of high school A+ tutoring opportunities, including Success Class Tutors, Viking Edge Mentors, and summer youth camps.  Please contact the FHHS A+ Coordinator for more information.

Students need to attend only one A+ training session after school.  They will be given all the required paperwork at this meeting to sign up for the A+ program, sign up for tutoring, and a tutoring contract.
All sessions are from 2:30-3:30 pm in the auditorium.  Students should attend the training in August if they plan to do their tutoring hours during first semester.  Students should attend the training session in November if they want to do their tutoring hours second semester.  Students should attend the training session in April if they want to do their tutoring hours in the summer.

Please note that students are required to complete all 50 hours during the semester that they begin working toward their hours.  Exceptions to this rule include Viking Edge hours and A+ tutors working at athletic camps.  New A+ assignments are made each Fall, Spring, and Summer.

A+ Grant
A+ students who also score three or better on at least two AP exams in the areas of math and science are now eligible to receive a one-time grant of $500.00.  However, they must apply to receive this money.  Please see the following website for more information
