Goulet of FHHS Selected as KMOX/SMSU Student of Achievement

There are so many high achieving students in the Francis Howell School District that sometimes it’s a challenge for students to stand out. Then to stand out from the thousands of great students in the metropolitan area is an even more fantastic feat. Logan Goulet of Francis Howell High School has done just that with her selection as a KMOX/Southeast Missouri State University Student of Achievement, one of only 30 students across the area to achieve that distinction.

This exclusive group was selected for their outstanding achievements in academics, athletics, the arts, community service, and leadership. “Being honored is so rewarding because it makes me feel like all my hard work is paying off,” said Goulet. “Sometimes with a busy schedule and hard course load, it feels like it is more effort than it's worth. This makes me feel confident that my work ethic in school will transfer into my future education and career.

Her work ethic certainly stands out, notes her school counselor, Kim Potts. “Logan is motivated by personal values and a voracious work ethic,” Potts said. “Leadership seems to be second nature to Logan as she juggles multiple leadership roles within the school community.” Goulet has earned All-Academic Team honors in softball and lacrosse, the latter of which she was named to the Honorable Mention All-Conference team. Through the Viking Softball team’s community outreach efforts, Goulet has participated in the Challenger Baseball Tournament, which pairs students with special needs with a buddy, playing multiple games of baseball throughout the tourney weekend. Goulet has worked with the same buddy, Evan, for two years, and his love for the game has increased her own.

Goulet’s 4.4 GPA reiterates her work ethic, especially considering the honors classes she takes. She does so while also demonstrating her desire to serve her peers. “Teachers report that she takes a leadership role in the classroom as she helps others who may not catch the concepts as quickly,” Potts said. “Her curiosity is an asset that leads to a deeper desire to understand the material at the highest level.”

Goulet is also a valued member of the FHHS yearbook staff. And this is no ordinary yearbook. “The Howelltonian” was recently inducted into the National School Publications Association’s Hall of Fame for earning All-American ratings for ten consecutive years. Goulet’s creativity and dependability are on full display with her photography and writing for this award-winning publication.

Goulet said, “At FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) meetings with Coach (Darren) Cissell we've focused a lot on how everyone has a reason for the decisions they make. So it's important to understand their story and not be so quick to judge just because people aren't making the same decisions as you, even if it can be difficult. This has also tied into my yearbook writing; we focus on how each individual at Howell has a unique story, and it's our job to find that, and this is what makes our yearbook so unique. One thing I've really taken from Howell,” Goulet said, “is that there's something for everyone, and I love this about our school. We have such a wide variety of personalities within our students and staff, which makes finding your place at the school easier. I encourage everyone to get involved in whatever way that may be – whether it's attending football games, joining yearbook, playing a sport, or joining a club. It gives you a chance to meet many new people and make lifelong memories.

KMOX Radio has been playing interviews with winners like Goulet throughout the spring. Goulet will also have an opportunity to accept a scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University in the fall of 2019. Congratulations to Logan!
