FHHS Golden Girls Win Class 6 State Championship

Most teams dance together after winning a state championship – but for the Golden Girls of Francis Howell High School, dancing together as a team is what clinched the title for them. A season that started last April finally culminated in February, when the Golden Girls Dance Team won the Class 6 State Championship for the second time in the past three years.
Gateway2Change Student Summit on Race

On March 10, student leaders from FHSD’s high schools took part in the final Gateway2Change Student Summit on Race of the school year at St. Louis University. When Gateway2Change met last November, prominent local businesses and organizations outlined the challenges they face in the areas of social and cultural diversity and equity. During the summit, student leaders presented their ideas and solutions to these real-world problems.

The Francis Howell School District (FHSD) works to prepare students for the jobs of the 21st century. At Francis Howell High School (FHHS), volunteer mentors from MasterCard recently assisted in that learning. Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Computer Science teacher Michele Heskin invite three developers from MasterCard, Sean Dailey, Ru Li, and Jared Boucher, to work with her PLTW class. The students are developing their own applications for mobile devices, better known simply as “apps.” Currently, there are more than two million apps available for download, and technology experts predict the demand for new apps will continue to increase.
Solving The World’s Problems - One Video at a Time

If a solution is going to be found for climate change, it will likely stem from conversations like those occurring in Sam Berendzen’s Environmental Science class at Francis Howell High School (FHHS). For their latest unit, students are making one-minute videos with proposed solutions on how to combat our changing climate and how to accommodate our growing population. It’s project-based learning at its finest, and may just include the answer to one of the world’s biggest problems.

FHSD National Signing Day

Wednesday, February 1, 2017 is National Signing Day, the first day that a high school senior can sign a binding National Letter of Intent (NLI) to play NCAA football. In the Francis Howell School District (FHSD), it is a day to honor the student-athletes in all sports as they prepare for the next step in their academic and athletic careers.
FHSD’s Inaugural Job Fair for Students is Well-Attended

On Jan. 11, 2017, Francis Howell School District (FHSD) hosted its inaugural Job Fair for high school students, and the evening was a tremendous success. 32 businesses and 357 students participated in an event that was the ideal introduction for students to the workforce. From practicing their interview and resume-writing skills to just learning how to dress to impress a potential employer, both students and area businesses got a return on their investment. Better-prepared students mean better employees, which means better business and better communities. It was more than practice; it was a practice in success.

The motto at Francis Howell High School (FHHS) is “R.I.S.E.,” or Respect, Integrity, Sportsmanship, and Excellence. But maybe it should be changed to “G.I.V.E.” FHHS students and staff want to promote high achievement in the classroom, on the field, and in the community. The latter is where FHHS has been really achieving this year, giving back to their community in so many ways, and no matter the season. They didn’t wait for the season of giving; they just give.
FHSD Journalism Students Continue to Make the Cover

Several Francis Howell School District (FHSD) students were among the many attendees from around the country at the Journalism Educators Association (JEA)/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, on Nov. 10-13. Awards were taken home by students, further validating the outstanding publication departments at all three high schools in FHSD.
Two FHSD Students Shine with Perfect ACT Scores

According to recent data, there are only about a thousand students in the United States every year who achieve perfection when taking the ACT test. David Yang from Francis Howell High School (FHHS), and Kayleigh Ammond from Francis Howell Central (FHC), are part of that 0.6% of almost two million students who did what many think is impossible: they received a perfect 36 on the ACT.
FHSD Youth in Government Students Take Office

The Youth in Government conference is an opportunity for more than 650 students from around the state of Missouri to learn about civic responsibility, all while participating in the democratic process at the state level. It’s a meeting of the state’s future leaders and decision-makers, and a large number of those students were from the Francis Howell School District (FHSD).

These selfless community members enhance the overall educational experience for students, as well as supporting teachers and staff. They help volunteer in the classroom and help with the “Great by 8” program. But they also help on the field, as one volunteer, CJ Vogt, has done for the last 40 years.

During fall break in the Francis Howell School District (FHSD), most students took a breather from their hectic schedules of homework, testing, and other school activities to recharge their proverbial batteries for the rest of the semester. But one group took special advantage of their days off, with 20 members from each high school getting together at Francis Howell North (FHN) High School to become better leaders in their communities. They listened to guest speakers and took part in activities to learn more about what it takes to improve their teams or clubs, schools, and community.
Nineteen FHSD Students Named National Merit Commended Scholars and Semifinalists

A total of 19 Francis Howell School District (FHSD) students have been recognized for their academic achievement by being named National Merit Commended Scholars and National Merit Semi-Finalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). NMSC announced the names of approximately 16,000 semifinalists during their annual event in September, and these high achievers now have the opportunity to move on in the competition for a chance to receive one of 7,500 scholarships, totaling more than $33 million, which will be offered to the winners next spring.

And two of those, Shaneerah Woodruff and Kevin Welch, are from the Francis Howell School District (FHSD).

Every month during the school year, the Francis Howell School District (FHSD) Board of Education welcomes the best and brightest students the community has to offer to their meetings. At the October meeting, Francis Howell High School (FHHS) senior Leah Amos represented the student body. FHHS Principal Dr. Dave Wedlock had the pleasure of announcing her as the student representative to the Board, and the only problem he had was choosing an adjective to describe her… so he chose many.

FHHS Student Honored By City of O’Fallon for Volunteerism

The City of O’Fallon hosts an annual Volunteer Recognition Banquet, where they honor those who unselfishly give up their free time to help improve the community. But there was one awardee who was conspicuously missing – Harsha Bollepalli of Francis Howell High School (FHHS). His name was announced as the winner of the 2016 Youth Leadership Award, but Bollepalli wasn’t there. You may be able to guess what he was doing – volunteering his time somewhere else.
New FHSD Safety Measures Include Unannounced Intruder Drills

Student safety is always a top priority of the Francis Howell School District (FHSD). The District annually conducts a variety of safety drills including fire, tornado, earthquake and intruder drills. Participation in these safety drills is where most students get directly involved in their own safety. New this year, FHSD will conduct one unannounced intruder drill at each of our schools.
FHHS Cheer Raises Money for Alzheimer’s Care, Research, and Support

Lots of clubs and teams at FHSD schools are giving back, and recently the Francis Howell High School (FHHS) cheerleaders took part in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, raising more than a thousand dollars for the cause.
A Program on the R.I.S.E. – Lady Vikings Volleyball Ranked Nationally

If you haven’t caught a Francis Howell High School girls’ volleyball game recently, you’re missing out on a lot. First, you’re missing a great team – they’re one of only two volleyball programs in the entire state of Missouri who are ranked nationally. But you’re also missing out on a team on the rise, both on and off the court. The Lady Vikings are excelling in the classroom, with the highest grade point average of all FHHS fall programs (an amazing 3.91 GPA), and they are making our community a better place by performing community outreach activities as well. They embody the Viking motto of R.I.S.E. – Respect, Integrity, Sportsmanship, and Excellence.

Graduating high school becomes an even more exciting life event when students not only receive their diploma, but also the news of winning a prestigious scholarship. Four of Francis Howell High School’s (FHHS) graduating seniors, Grant Morey, Blake Felt, Elise Kaminski and Sean Sebacher, had the opportunity to celebrate twice, as they were among 800 students from across the country to win scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).
First Responders Night Brings Community Together in Support of BackStoppers and Military Personnel

Almost 4,000 people came together for the second annual First Responders Night, an event hosted by the FHHS activities department to recognize and support first responders and military personnel.
FHSD Advanced Placement (AP) Scholars Announced by The College Board

The Advanced Placement (AP) Program recognizes high school students who have demonstrated outstanding college-level achievement through AP courses and exams with the “AP Scholar Awards.” The Francis Howell School District (FHSD) had 233 juniors and seniors that earned this prestigious award for 2015-16.
FHSD Recognized for Bus Safety

The buses that safely transport students of the Francis Howell School District (FHSD) every day will display a special new sticker starting in August, after earning the “Total Fleet Excellence” distinction for 2016. The stickers indicate excellence in the overall maintenance and reliability of the District’s bus fleet. The distinction is determined by the Missouri State Highway Patrol based on the results of the annual school bus inspection, a program conducted by the Patrol’s Motor Vehicle Inspection Division.

It’s an award created to honor sportsmanship and leadership in school. And if it’s something that FHSD sports has been known to exhibit, it is sportsmanship.
FHHS Baseball Coach Tony Perkins Wins National Coach of the Year Honors

Francis Howell High School’s Viking baseball team is still reveling over their fourth state championship in the program’s history, but the awards keep coming in. Specifically, head coach Tony Perkins, who’s been the team’s manager for more than twenty years, has been receiving recognition from not just area coaches, but those from around the entire nation. Last week, he was named the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) National Coaches of the Year, winning the High School Division I Coach of the Year for Region 5 (MO).

Francis Howell High School wins Post-Dispatch Sports Program of the Year; FHHS Credits its Community

It’s something we’re getting used to when it comes to the Francis Howell High School (FHHS) baseball team – championships. The Vikings were state champs in 2003, 2011, 2013 and now 2016. But the baseball team isn’t the only winner among the Vikings’ sports programs. The boys soccer team also won a state championship last year, its first in school history. And there were final four finishes for wrestling and girls basketball as well. This recognition is one for all.
New Immunization Requirement for Incoming Eighth Graders and Seniors

Beginning with the 2016-17 school year, all eighth grade students and incoming high school seniors will be required to have the meningococcal (meningitis) vaccine. These immunizations are required by the State of Missouri prior to the start of school.
