Francis Howell School District (FHSD) students and teachers are
always seeking ways to help their community. Lots of clubs and teams at
FHSD schools are giving back, and recently the Francis Howell High
School (FHHS) cheerleaders took part in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s,
raising more than a thousand dollars for the cause.
We remember
those days in high school – when the weekend came closer, that’s all we
could think about. What would we do with our friends that weekend? What
would we do with our family? The FHHS cheerleaders had grand plans as
well. They still spent their weekend having fun with friends and family,
but they did it raising money for a great cause.
The Walk to End Alzheimer’s took place at St. Charles Community College in St. Charles,
and raised nearly $300,000 for Alzheimer’s support, care, and research.
Thanks to the participation of groups like the FHHS cheerleaders, lives
could be saved. But certainly the quality of life for those enduring the
symptoms of the disease and their families will be improved thanks to
these generous participants.
FHHS Principal Dr. Dave Wedlock
said, “We are very proud of the caring, unselfish efforts of our
students involved in charitable work as it demonstrates their awareness
of the needs in our community and their willingness to step forward to
make a positive difference.”
And that’s what it’s all about –
making a difference for those around us and improving our community.
It’s a lesson that is not necessarily taught in a classroom, but
teachers, coaches, and the students themselves are learning what it
takes to make a great community. Not bad for a weekend!
