During fall break in the Francis Howell School District (FHSD), most
students took a breather from their hectic schedules of homework,
testing, and other school activities to recharge their proverbial
batteries for the rest of the semester. But one group took special
advantage of their days off, with 20 members from each high school
getting together at Francis Howell North (FHN) High School to become
better leaders in their communities. They listened to guest speakers and
took part in activities to learn more about what it takes to improve
their teams or clubs, schools, and community.
This is just
another way that FHSD schools are teaching leadership through not just
sports, but all activities and clubs. Click here to watch a video about
what FHSD is doing to foster better leaders for our community through
activities.
At the leadership summit during fall break, there
were two guest speakers, Jim Powers and Todd Zell. Powers, from the High School Sports Caravan, discussed the appropriate use of social media.
Zell, executive director at MSHSAA, presented on the "Why We Play"
program that the MSHSAA has adopted. Students created their own "why we
play" statements, and also participated in multiple team-building
activities.
Teaching leadership and sportsmanship helps students –
whatever their activity may be – become better teammates for all of
us…both on and off the field. The Activities Leadership Summit merely
scratches the surface of how FHSD strives to foster better leaders and
community members.
