FHSD Receives Recertification for Project Lead The Way Engineering Program

The Francis Howell School District (FHSD) high schools have received national recertification for the Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Engineering program, which has been offered in the District since 2010. PLTW is a nonprofit organization that provides a transformative learning experience for students and teachers.

Students like Francis Howell Central (FHC) High School senior Brad Schinker appreciate the relevance and rigor of the classes. “PTLW gives you the opportunity to get a taste of all of the different types of engineering,” said Schinker. “It’s not just a lecture and a test; you get to be hands-on and apply what you’ve learned. It’s important to see what you’re interested in, and it helps you make decisions about possible careers.”

The national PLTW recognition distinguishes schools for successfully demonstrating a commitment to PLTW’s national standards. “FHSD is excited to continue our partnership with Project Lead The Way to offer coursework in Engineering, as well as Bio-Medical Science and Computer Science,” said Dr. Chris Greiner, FHSD Director of Student Learning. “PLTW classes deliver an engaging learning environment for students. These experiences provide the knowledge and skills our students need to thrive in high-demand college and career pathways.”

As part of the recognition process, a team composed of teachers, staff, students, and members of the community submitted a self-assessment of the District’s implementation of PLTW Engineering, followed by a site visit from a PLTW-affiliated team. PLTW’s team met with teachers, school administrators, counselors, students, and members of the school’s Partnership Team.

PLTW Engineering empowers students to step into the role of an engineer, adopt a problem-solving mindset, and make the leap from dreamers to doers. In addition to K-12 curricular pathways, PLTW provides teachers with high-quality professional development training that gives them the support and resources they need to devote more time to inspiring students.

“Congratulations to the high schools in the Francis Howell School District, and thank you for your commitment to students,” said PLTW President and CEO Vince Bertram. “We look forward to continuing to work together to prepare students to thrive in our evolving world.”
