There’s an App for That at FHHS

The Francis Howell School District (FHSD) works to prepare students for the jobs of the 21st century. At Francis Howell High School (FHHS), volunteer mentors from MasterCard recently assisted in that learning. Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Computer Science teacher Michele Heskin invite three developers from MasterCard, Sean Dailey, Ru Li, and Jared Boucher, to work with her PLTW class. The students are developing their own applications for mobile devices, better known simply as “apps.” Currently, there are more than two million apps available for download, and technology experts predict the demand for new apps will continue to increase.

“The developers assisted my students with direction on their apps and helped them clarify their concepts,” said Heskin. “It was an outstanding opportunity for the students. They learned more about design, the duties of programmers, the work environment, and what types of skills they need to be successful in the field.”

It was very ‘app’arent that students enjoyed the opportunity to work with professionals. Junior Simon Travers said “It’s an interesting experience that gives us a unique perspective on programming; it seems like an exciting career choice that would be fun to explore further.”

The MasterCard mentors gave students direction on architecture and efficiency, and enjoyed the contagious energy. “We’re working with some really enthusiastic kids, it’s pretty exciting to see them start from scratch and see them learning and figure out how to put things together,” said developer Sean Dailey. “MasterCard is passionate about technology, and fresh ideas and new perspectives are really important, and these guys are ready to tackle the challenge.”
