College-Sponsored National Merit Scholarship Winners


The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) has announced that Arianna Chaves and Blake Peters from FHN and Sarah Ortbal and Michael Spencer from FHHS are winners of National Merit Scholarships financed by their respective colleges and universities.

Chaves has been awarded a National Merit Missouri University of Science and Technology Scholarship and intends to pursue a career in computer engineering. Peters has received a National Merit University of Missouri – Columbia Scholarship and plans to major in civil engineering. Ortbal has been awarded a National Merit University of Alabama Scholarship and intends to pursue a career in microbiology/immunology. Spencer has received a National Merit University of Missouri – Columbia Scholarship and plans on studying biomedicine.

Officials of each sponsor college selected their scholarship winners from among the Finalists in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution. These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.

This year, 173 higher education institutions are underwriting Merit Scholarship awards through the National Merit Scholarship Program. Sponsor colleges and universities include 95 private and 78 public institutions located in 43 states and the District of Columbia.
