Francis Howell High School programs teach Respect, Integrity, Sportsmanship, and Excellence (RISE), and dedicate their time to hosting events that teach students the value of helping others and getting involved. The school's third annual First Responder’s Night football game drew a huge crowd because of this dedication. Over 4,000 students, staff, and community members packed the stands on Friday, September 8, to show their support for military personnel and first responders.
The evening began with a $2,200 donation from Farmers Insurance to FHHS. Board of Education members Rene Cope, Patrick Lange, Sandra Ferguson, Mary Lange, Patrick Lane, and Superintendent Dr. Mary Hendricks-Harris were also recognized for their contributions to the school and the District.
The St. Charles County Ambulance District, Cottleville Police Department, and Cottleville Fire Department were praised for their service to our communities. Those who have served and are currently serving in the military were asked to stand to observe an amazing spectacle. In the bleachers, spectators donned colored t-shirts to create a 100-foot long American flag. The Howell Student Council provided red, white, and blue shirts, which helped honor and recognize military personnel and first responders.
Activities Director SeanErwin said, “Taking the time to provide teachable moments and opportunities for our student-participants to grow as young men and women is very important and an integral part of being involved in an activity or sport at Howell. Hopefully through these opportunities, their understanding and appreciation for veterans, those currently serving, and our first responders will grow and help to provide assistance to these groups.”
Flags were also presented on the field by local first responders, and band members from Francis Howell Middle School joined the Francis Howell High School marching band. Together, the two bands played the National Anthem.
A Metro Air Support Helicopter delivered the game ball to the middle of the field, and landed on the Howell “H.” Dr. Hendricks-Harris and Mrs. Cope were escorted onto the field by a police officer, to receive the ball from one of the pilots.
Halftime entertainment included a “Dash for Cash.” Over $2,200 was collected in a mere ninety seconds as freshman football players, the Golden Girls (FHHS' Dance Team), and cheerleaders from both Howell and Troy (the evening's opponent) raced through the stands. Over $6,600 has been raised during First Responder’s Night games over the past three years, and all proceeds have been donated to BackStoppers. “All of our programs are focused on giving back and providing assistance to our community," said Erwin. "It is truly such a positive culture that has developed among our students, coaches, sponsors, parents, and community.”
