FHSD Celebrates Veterans Day

FHSD Veterans Day Events


In honor of Veterans Day on Monday, Nov. 11, FHSD schools are participating in a variety of assemblies, activities, and celebrations to recognize veterans and all of our loved ones who have served our country. Here is a list of events happening throughout the District:

Becky David Elementary students are participating in a variety of patriotic activities and lessons related to Veterans Day in music class, physical education class, and Vacation Station. In art class, students are making “thank you” art projects for the VA Hospital and a homeless shelter that serves veterans in St. Louis. In addition, classroom teachers will read patriotic books, and students will complete research that relates to the military. The daily announcements will share a brief history of each military branch.

Castlio Elementary will honor veterans with a celebration on Monday, Nov. 11, from 9:30 – 10:45 AM. The Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops will begin the program with a flag ceremony followed by a light breakfast and a musical performance by the third grade class. 

Central Elementary will host a Veterans Day celebration on Monday, Nov. 11 at 7:45 AM. Students are invited to bring their family and friends who are veterans to school for donuts and coffee. At 8:30 AM, the Central community and guests will gather in the gym for the pledge of allegiance and a musical performance by the students. In addition, they will create a “Wall of Pride” in the atrium, and students will participate in a book tasting in the Learning Commons.

Daniel Boone Elementary is hosting a Veterans Day celebration on Monday, Nov. 11. Veterans are invited to a light breakfast at 8:30 AM, followed by a celebration in the gym at 9:30 AM. The morning will include musical performances, an Honor Flight presentation, and a guest speaker. In addition, attendees will watch a video that will share students’ thoughts on “what is a veteran.”

Fairmount Elementary will place red cups in the chain-link fence outside of the school to spell out the words “Thank You Veterans.” American flags will line the street. Additionally, students will participate in patriotic activities in their art and music classes.

Harvest Ridge Elementary will host an assembly on Friday, Nov. 8, at 9:30 AM. The assembly will include a guest speaker, performances from the choir and the After Hours band, and an Honor Flight presentation. A luncheon will immediately follow the assembly. Each hallway throughout the school will be decorated to represent the different branches of the military.

Henderson Elementary students will participate in a vocal performance for veterans on Monday, Nov. 11 at 9:25 AM. Veterans will be invited to stay after the performance for a reception with light refreshments.

Independence Elementary will host a light breakfast on Monday, Nov. 11, at 8:30 AM, followed by an assembly at 9:30 AM. The event will include musical performances, expressions of gratitude, a guest speaker from Honor Flight, and more. The hallway at Independence will transform into a Veterans Memorial Wall to honor veterans both past and present.

John Weldon Elementary is hosting a Veterans Day celebration on Monday, Nov. 11. Veterans and current members of the armed forces are invited for a light breakfast/reception in the Learning Commons at 8:15 AM. From there, veterans will have the chance to greet students as they enter the building. At 9:30 AM, the Weldon community will gather for an assembly led by the third grade class that will include musical performances. In addition, two speakers will share what it means to be a veteran.

Warren Elementary will host a Veterans Day celebration on Monday, Nov. 11, from 9:45 – 11:00 AM. Veterans and their guests will enjoy refreshments and hospitality followed by a program. The celebration will include musical performances by the show choir and student speeches. In addition to the program, veterans will be invited to the classrooms in the days prior to allow students the opportunity to hear directly from those who have served our country.

Barnwell Middle is honoring veterans with a breakfast on Monday, Nov. 11, from 7:30 – 8:30 AM in the Learning Commons. Students will also participate in a poster contest to express their appreciation for veterans. The posters will be displayed during breakfast. Lastly, the social studies classes will compete in penny wars to raise money for the Gary Sinise Foundation.

Bryan Middle students will attend an assembly on Nov. 11 at 9:00 AM in the gym. Family members who have served or are currently serving are invited to attend. The assembly will include a slide show, musical performances, a guest speaker, and more.

FHMS students will participate in penny wars and a Red, White, and Blue Jeans theme during the week of Nov. 11 – 15 to raise money for the Greater St. Louis Honor Flight. For a minimum cash donation of $10, students will have the opportunity to wear jeans all week.

Hollenbeck Middle is hosting a Veterans Day celebration on Monday, Nov. 11. The PTO will provide a breakfast for veteran guests at 7:15 AM. After the meal, the Hollenbeck community will gather for an assembly at 8:30 AM in the Hollenbeck gym.

Saeger Middle is celebrating Veterans Day with a brunch on Monday, Nov. 11 from 9:00 – 10:00 AM. NJHS has created a tribute to veterans and will have a U.S. Army Retiree as the guest speaker for the event. Students are encouraged to invite family members or Saeger community members who are veterans to attend.

FHHS is celebrating Veterans Day with a performance by the band in the morning and a breakfast for all staff members. In addition, certificates will be distributed to the veterans on staff and an announcement will be made recognizing their service. Pins will be sold to fund veteran’s services that help those who suffer from PTSD.

FHC Epsilon Beta will host a Veterans Day Breakfast in the Learning Commons on Monday, Nov. 11. The morning will include musical performances by the FHC jazz band and choirs. Epsilon Beta has set up a donation spot for USO and will raise money for Honor Flight by holding a raffle. In addition, the FHC community is encouraged to wear, red, white, and blue on Veterans Day.

FHN is hosting a Veterans Day celebration on Monday, Nov. 11. All community members are invited to attend a mixer in the auditorium where refreshments will be served. At 1:00 PM, the community will gather in the gymnasium for an assembly, which will include musical performances, a guest speaker, and letters to share.
