Talented. Courageous. Gregarious. These are just a few of the adjectives that Principal David Wedlock used to describe FHHS senior David Yang at the October Board Meeting. The Board of Education was honored to welcome Yang as the student representative for this month.
Yang is more than just your average student. He is a National Merit Semi-Finalist. He scored a 36 on his ACT after his freshman year of high school, which placed him in the top one percent of students nationally. Furthermore, he has an impressive GPA of 4.82 and has earned a college equivalency score on at least nine Advanced Placement (AP) exams.
While Yang is a gifted student inside the classroom, he is also just as dedicated to his education outside of school. On the weekends, he participates in math completions and has qualified for the national American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) twice. He recently received the Excellence in Research award from the Students and Teachers as Research Scientists (STARS) program, which he participated in this past summer.
He is talented in his academic life, but he is also charming in his social life. On top of his intellect, his character and ability to relate to others amazes his friends and teachers. “He is at once analytic, warm, and cogent in ways that invite and inspire others to be a part of solutions and seek to be their best,” continues Wedlock. Yang carries these wonderful qualities into his extracurricular activities, such as his leadership role as captain of the boys swimming team and his participation in the academic competition Scholar Bowl and the Technical Student Association at FHHS.
“David possesses a unique acumen for resolving challenges whether they be as intricate as the most challenging math problems in the country for high school students or navigating the sophisticated, nuanced opportunities to connect with other people,” says Wedlock. Yang even tackles challenges in his leisure time as he spends many weekends rock climbing and hanging out with friends. One of his next big endeavors will be deciding his future career goals. While that is yet to be determined, Yang plans on pursuing an applied mathematics degree in college. Whether he is encountering a new math problem or a new friend next year, Yang will continue to make our District proud.
